A reservoir of consciousness
At its core, consciousness is awareness. It is the ability to know, to sense, to witness. It is not the thoughts we think, but the presence that knows we are thinking. It is not the emotions, but the space in which emotions arise.
In both Daoist and Yogic philosophy, awareness is the field behind all experience — awake, alive, watching, listening, even when we are not paying attention. A reservoir of consciousness is a place or theme in our life where that awareness gathers, deepens and becomes shaped by experience. It is a container, like a basin, that holds and collects a certain kind of life energy. Within these reservoirs, our consciousness is tested, expanded, restricted and refined until we awaken to parts of ourselves we didn’t know before.
INVITATIONS
Act in alignment. Recognise your current situation and imagine what it could look like if you made a change. Take action with the understanding that you have a role in shaping that change.
Explore a body focused practices like Yin Yoga. What we are really doing through this more subtle work, is a deliberate moving of human consciousness through the body — returning to what is most simple, most direct, most aligned.
Cultivate awareness. Through meditation or journaling, observe your thoughts and emotions without judgment. Remember: your anchor is intention. Guide the mind gently back to the point you have chosen.
Trust the feeling sense. When we are aligned with ourselves, we create a natural ease — like standing well in our own life. This stance allows integrity to guide our choices moment by moment.
These areas of life might be our health, relationships, work or learning. and each asks something of us, shaping the way our awareness flows.
When we allow space, the reservoirs within us begin to reveal themselves. Whilst their nature will be different for each of us, what they all have in common is that they show us where our awareness is ready to grow.
If we can remember, in every season, to stay close to that awareness, we live with a freedom that no circumstance can take away.
